10 Spiritual Practices To Connect More With God
#1: Press The "Pause Button on Life"

Posted by Klaus Issler on September 9, 2008

In Wasting Time with God (pgs. 141-142, 162-163), I underscore the importance of creating space for solitude and silence throughout the rhythm of our day. This is opportune for becoming aware of how God is with us, which is good for our health and attitude:
  • Throughout our day, wherever we are, take a 30-second break to have a word with our Sponsor--the God who is always near.
  • Personalize God's omnipresence by inviting God into our day (Ps 139:23-24)--especially during the blocks of time we normally tend to be "alone" in our own thoughts.
  • Recite a special verse a favorite chorus, or prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.").
  • Get "physical" (Rom 6:13): e.g., say our thoughts to God out loud, kneel before God, lift our arms up to God.
  • Place sticky "pause buttons" as visual reminders on our dashboard, computer, TV or other areas that visually occupy our attention. For more on this idea, see The Lost Virtue of Happiness (pgs. 144-147).
Try this practice out for a few days and at this post comment about your experience.
